The Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2022 (LACCW) will be held from July 18 to 22 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The event aims to engage and empower stakeholders to drive climate action across countries, communities, and economies.
As part of LACCW, on Wednesday, July 20, at 3:00 PM, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy will host a meeting between cities and financial institutions involved in the climate fight. Supported by the European Union, the event seeks to provide a space for dialogue to identify relevant financing mechanisms to boost local climate action in the GCoM’s member cities.
Participating in this meeting will be the cities of Serra Talhada, Brazil; Montería, Colombia; and Camilo Aldao, Argentina. These three cities have made progress in their climate actions and will use their participation in the Week to review financeable projects with investment specialists.
Accelerating the Implementation of Climate Action Plans in Latin American Cities
Also on Wednesday, July 20, at 5:00 PM, the Global Covenant of Mayors, in collaboration with CEPAL, will co-organize another event. This event will present the pilot project carried out in 2021 by CEPAL and the Covenant, which examined the Climate Action Plans (PACs) in three signatory cities of the GCoM: San José, Costa Rica; Quito, Ecuador; and Mexico City, Mexico. The pilot project focused on developing tools for analyzing PACs and a methodology that provided more precise guidelines on implementing priority mitigation and adaptation measures/actions.
The session aims to discuss the tools proposed in the pilot’s publication to contribute to implementing the Climate Action Plans of Latin American cities through diagnostic instruments. It seeks to create a space for exchange to highlight practical experiences and opportunities that may be relevant for realizing the ambitious commitments of Latin American cities within the framework of COP27.
