GCoM and CDP reinforce 2026 climate reporting as a tool to advance local action
Municipalities committed to the Compact have until October 26 to report through the CDP-ICLEI Reporting Platform, where the Energy Pillar becomes mandatory this year
CDP, in partnership with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy in Latin America (GCoM), Regions4 and the GCF Task Force, held two webinars to support cities, states and regions through the 2026 climate reporting cycle: “¡Todo lo que necesita saber para potenciar su reporte CDP 2026!” in Spanish, and “Tudo o que você precisa saber para alavancar o seu reporte CDP em 2026” in Portuguese. Both were held on August 12, at different times, expanding access to guidance for subnational governments across Latin America.
During the sessions, relevant information for reporting was presented. For municipalities committed to the Compact, the key messages were about the deadline (October 26) and about GCoM’s Energy Pillar, which as of 2026 joins the Mitigation and Adaptation Pillars as a requirement of the commitment.
The Spanish-language session featured Guilherme Ponce, regional engagement lead for Latin America and North America at CDP; Rebecca Borges, GCoM Latin America coordinator; representatives from Regions4; and Norma Pedrosa, CDP landscapes manager. The Portuguese-language session featured Guilherme Ponce, Rebecca Borges, representatives from Regions4, and Walquíria Biscaia, Climate Action and International Relations specialist.
Reporting as part of GCoM’s pathway
For GCoM signatory cities, reporting is a key step in tracking progress on mitigation, adaptation and, as of 2026, energy as well. It also strengthens the transparency of local climate action and supports the initiative’s recognition pathway, including the achievement of badges.
Rebecca Borges highlighted the importance of municipalities taking part in the reporting cycle as part of a long-term vision for local climate action. According to her, reporting helps make progress visible, builds capacity, and recognizes cities’ progress along their climate pathway.
Within GCoM, this process makes it possible to monitor cities’ commitments to reduce or limit greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for the effects of climate change, and expand access to sustainable energy.
Deadline, documents and next steps
One of the central messages of the webinars was the importance of partnerships in supporting subnational governments through the reporting process. Collaboration among CDP, GCoM, Regions4 and the GCF Task Force facilitates access to guidance, resources and methodologies, while connecting local action to international climate commitments.
The reporting cycle remains open until October 26, the deadline through which reported data will be considered for the Compact’s badge awards.
The Common Reporting Framework and the Guide to Reporting to GCoM through the CDP-ICLEI Platform are the core guidance documents for municipalities committed to GCoM.
