The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy held a signing ceremony on March 21 in Mendoza, Argentina, as part of the III Ibero-American Forum of Mayors, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the City of Mendoza. This forum serves as preparation for the Annual Meeting of the Boards of Governors of the IDB and IDB Invest – Inter-American Investment Corporation, taking place from March 22 to 25, also in Mendoza.
On this occasion, eight Argentinian cities established or confirmed their commitments to the Global Covenant of Mayors: Corrientes, Guaymallén, Yerba Buena, Mendoza, Rosario, San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, Tres de Febrero, and Godoy Cruz. Additionally, the Mexican city of Xalapa also signed the GCoM.
The next step for these cities is to conduct climate studies to assess their municipalities’ current environmental situation. Afterward, each city will set its greenhouse gas reduction targets and, with the support of the GCoM, implement its action plan to achieve these goals.
The Global Covenant of Mayors
Aligned with international policies on climate change, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is the largest global alliance of cities and local governments voluntarily committed to combating climate change, reducing its inevitable impacts, and facilitating access to sustainable and affordable energy for all. Any city in the world can participate, regardless of its size or location.
In Argentina, the GCoM is supported by National Coordinators – the Argentine Network of Municipalities Facing Climate Change (RAMCC) and the Argentine Federation of Municipalities (FAM) – and a Consultative Committee, composed of ICLEI, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, RAMCC, FAM, and the Delegation of the European Union in Argentina.
