During the Continental Forum of Intermediate Cities, organized by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Cuenca (Ecuador) from February 28 to March 2, the Cuenca Declaration was drafted in preparation for the First World Forum of Intermediate Cities, which will take place in Chefchaouen (Morocco) in July.
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy was highlighted in the Declaration as a commitment from the participating municipalities. On page 10 of the document, it states:
“(We commit to) Implement the ‘Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy,’ as well as through national strategies for intermediate cities, to strengthen our role in the fight against climate change by including climate and energy goals in our political agendas and thus adhere to the agreements and resolutions of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.”
