In an article published on the SDG Knowledge Hub platform, Quebec’s Envoy for Climate Change Affairs, Jean Lemire, emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in combating climate change and illustrates how the Quebec government collaborates with regions in other countries in this effort.
International cooperation for the environment can bring together different perspectives that, when combined, result in solutions that might not arise independently from these views. Using local solutions refined with international techniques can be highly beneficial.
In this context, the Quebec government, for example, launched a series of measures at COP 21 to assist French-speaking countries in addressing climate change, as these nations are particularly vulnerable to its impacts. These measures are even funded with support from the Canadian province, which maintains an International Climate Cooperation Program.
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy
Aligned with the vision of Quebec’s representative, the Global Covenant of Mayors believes in the potential of international cooperation to unite the efforts of various actors in favor of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The GCoM is the world’s largest coalition of local governments against climate change. It seeks to highlight municipalities’ leadership in this struggle. A city only needs to have a democratically elected government to join this effort. Learn more about how your city can participate in the GCoM here.
