12 Mayors and Vice Mayors from 8 Countries Join New Governance Body
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy has announced the mayors selected to join the Mayors’ Forum in Latin America. This new governance body includes six male and six female mayors from signatory municipalities of the GCoM, representing eight countries in the region. They have been recognized for their work and commitment to combating climate change.
According to Elise Abbès Castillo, the senior expert of the Global Covenant of Mayors who led the call for applications, “The Forum aims to strengthen the voice of cities in the GCoM’s support strategy and priorities in Latin America, allowing community leaders and representatives of the Alliance to serve as spokespersons and inspire more cities.”
Elise explained that this platform will also increase the visibility of the signatory municipalities’ climate action commitments and reinforce their presence at key events and spaces for the regional and global climate agenda.
A complimentary call is expected at the beginning of 2023 to fill the remaining slots in Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru.
The first meeting of the Mayor’s Forum will be held in person as a side event to the C40 Cities Summit, which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 19 to 21, 2022.
