The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) participated in the activity “Contributions of the Mercociudades Network to the GCoM for the Future and COP27,” organized by Mercociudades.
The dialogue, which included participation and contributions from the GCoM, gathered input from local governments for the Pact for the Future. This was done as part of the representation of the Latin American section of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) for the political document to be addressed at the upcoming World Congress in Daejeon, South Korea, from October 10 to 14, 2022.
This document is based on the notion that local and regional governments play a fundamental role as political actors, whose main objective is to safeguard the dreams and aspirations of communities while balancing the needs of current and future generations.
The GCoM understands that equality is an indispensable pillar of any sustainable society and underscores the need for a change in the relationship with nature, which requires renewed governance, with trust as an essential element among actors.
Representing the Global Covenant of Mayors, Valentina Falkenstein, the Helpdesk Coordinator for GCoM Americas, congratulated Mercociudades on the initiative and emphasized the importance of creating dialogue spaces that highlight the priorities and commitments of Latin American cities in the lead-up to COP27. “We recognize that the work and capacities of governments are strengthened and amplified when working in networks, and initiatives like these help Latin American local governments present a united voice at COP27,” she concluded.
