Training on Local Climate Action Plan Strengthens Commitment of Brazilian Cities in the Global Covenant of Mayors
Brasília, November 10, 2023 – The IV National Meeting of Municipalities, promoted by the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM), is hosting a significant event aimed at strengthening the commitment of Brazilian cities belonging to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in the fight against climate change. The Local Climate Action Plans Workshop brought together representatives from municipalities across the country for training and sharing climate strategies.
In this workshop, held on November 7 and 8 in Brasília, the cities of Abaetetuba (PA), Barcarena (PA), Brasiléia (AC), Cáceres (MT), Carinhanha (BA), Cordeirópolis (SP), Indiaroba (SE), Jandaíra (RN), Parauapebas (PA), Sirinhaém (PE), São Cristóvão (SE), São Leopoldo (RS), supported by the National Covenant Strategy in Brazil, delved into the practices and plans necessary to boost climate action in their municipalities.
The training, conducted by Sandino Lamarca, technical consultant for the Covenant in Brazil, is essential to equip technical teams with the knowledge and tools needed to develop and implement effective Climate Action Plans. Topics covered included greenhouse gas mitigation strategies, adaptation to climate change, the integration of climate actions into municipal policies, and resource allocation for the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Hélinah Cardoso, Regional Director of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in the Americas, emphasized the magnitude of the event: “We deeply value the presence of these knowledge multipliers, especially considering the prominent role that Brazil has taken on the global climate agenda.” Hélinah also highlighted the Covenant’s commitment to empower small and medium-sized cities through training, emphasizing that the issue of climate change is not limited to large cities and should be incorporated into the agenda of all municipalities. “We are committed to ensuring that the knowledge and tools needed are accessible to all communities, regardless of size, thus strengthening the collective response to climate challenges.”
The workshop had the support of the European Union and the coordination of the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM), Alziras Institute, National Front of Mayors (FNP), and ICLEI South America – Local Governments for Sustainability, national coordinators of the Global Covenant of Mayors in Brazil, and institutions leading the promotion and support of climate actions in cities throughout the country.
Furthermore, the presence of authorities such as Eduardo Tadeu, Executive Director of ABM, and Michelle Ferreti, director of the Alziras Institute, highlights the commitment of different institutions in Brazil to address the challenges of climate change at the municipal level.
