Barcarena, an Amazonian city, Recognized by the UN as a Resilience Hub
Barcarena, a city located in the Brazilian Amazon, has received an exceptional honor by being recognized by the United Nations (UN) as a Resilience Hub under the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative. This achievement is a testament to the city’s commitment to disaster risk reduction, climate action, and sustainable urban development.
What makes this recognition even more special is that Barcarena becomes the first city in the Amazon and the fifth in Brazil to receive this distinction, joining Porto Alegre, Recife, Campinas, and Salvador. This milestone highlights the city’s crucial role in the subnational climate movement in Latin America and the Amazon region.
As a Resilience Hub, Barcarena takes on the responsibility of serving as a mentor for other cities, sharing its knowledge and experiences to strengthen urban resilience throughout the region. This designation comes at a time when environmental protection and sustainability are more critical than ever in the global context.
In addition to this prestigious recognition from the UN, Barcarena and its Mayor Renato Ogawa are active members of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Latin America. They also receive financial support from the European Union for the development of the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, demonstrating a strong commitment to climate action at both local and international levels.
This achievement not only elevates Barcarena but also highlights the critical importance of the Amazon in the fight against climate change and the preservation of natural ecosystems. The city is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient future, and its leadership is an inspiring example for other regions and cities worldwide.
The recognition as a Resilience Hub is a reminder that local actions can have a significant global impact, and Barcarena is leading the way towards a greener and more sustainable future for all.
