- 17:45 – 19:00 – Roundtable on Gender and Local Climate Action
- Location: Marriott Panama Hotel, Colón 1 Room
The panel on gender and local climate action, taking place during the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week on October 23, organized by the Covenant of Mayors, represents a crucial step toward promoting gender equality in the realm of environmental public policies.
Roundtable on Gender and Local Climate Action
In the session “Women leaders facing the climate crisis: Challenges and best practices in Latin America and the Caribbean,” promoted by the Covenant of Mayors, the gender perspective in environmental public policies in small and medium-sized municipalities will be addressed. This roundtable will cover four main topics reflecting the importance of promoting gender equality policies in the territories of Latin America:
1. Sharing and connecting experiences of women’s political leadership in public administration. In particular, addressing gaps in women’s political participation in the region and the importance of women’s representation in local decision-making bodies.
2. Raising awareness about the importance of a cross-cutting gender approach in environmental policies. Risks associated with the climate crisis in these municipalities will be addressed, recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change and natural disasters on women and girls, especially those in vulnerable situations. The importance of integrating a gender approach into all local environmental policies and practices will be discussed.
3. Municipal experience exchange on successful interventions implemented at the local level. Women leaders will share best practices carried out in each municipality, fostering the exchange of experiences.
4. Awareness of municipal networks/women’s networks: the importance of networks to share experiences and stay in touch among women mayors.Participating Leaders
The panel will feature the participation of some female leaders from the Covenant, including Carolina Basualdo (Mayor of Despeñaderos, Argentina); Sheran Palacio (Mayor of Belmopán, Belize); Kerry Breedy Prince (Mayor of Portsmouth, Dominica); Marcia Conrado (Mayor of Serra Talhada, Brazil); Viviana Carpio (Vice Mayor of Oreamuno, Costa Rica); Christiane Ferreira da Silva (Secretary of Environment, Belém, Brazil) (to be confirmed).
