Webinar on Climate Financing for Municipalities in Ecuador
Quito, Ecuador, May 28, 2024 – The webinar series “GCoM ECUADOR MUNICIPAL DIALOGUES: TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY” concluded its third session with the event titled “Towards a Sustainable Future – Climate Financing for Municipalities in Ecuador.” Organized within the framework of the National Strategy of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), funded by the European Union in Latin America, and coordinated by WWF Ecuador and the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME), this event highlighted the importance of climate financing to strengthen municipalities’ capacity to combat climate change.
The webinar, held on May 28, 2024, brought together experts in the field of climate financing, who shared their knowledge and experiences with over 100 participants, including mayors, municipal officials, academics, and representatives from non-governmental organizations.
Speakers included Andrés Mogro, Manager of the Resilience and Climate Transition Program at the Avina Foundation, who discussed climate financing opportunities in Ecuador. Guillermo Piñones and Agustín Botterón from GCoM-Gap Fund Latin America and the Caribbean, presented on the gaps and opportunities in climate financing for cities. Juan Hidalgo, an expert in sustainable finance, discussed green financing mechanisms available through national credit institutions.
Participants had the opportunity to interact with the experts during Q&A sessions, allowing for a fruitful exchange of ideas and strategies. This enriching dialogue underscored the need to strengthen local capacities and explore various financing sources to implement effective and sustainable climate actions.
The event not only provided a forum for learning and discussion but also motivated municipalities to actively seek climate financing for their projects, reinforcing local resilience against the challenges of climate change.
