Members of the Forum of Coordinators of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) in Latin America met remotely on October 21st for the second meeting of the year. The Forum discussions centered around the process of validation of national strategies, with contributions from coordinators from various Latin American countries.
Elise Abbes Castillo, specialist of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) in the Americas, began the session highlighting that the objective of the meeting was to deepen the discussions on the process of elaboration of national strategies and on possible opportunities for collaboration amongst the countries in the region.
To facilitate the exchange of experiences and interaction between the coordinators, the contributions and action items were shared on a virtual mural at the end of the session. In this way, the participants were able to contribute to a mural with suggestions, experiences, training ideas, among others.
The coordinator of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) Americas, Jordan Harris, presented the steps of the validation process of the national strategic activities financed by GCoM Americas. He also highlighted the pre-validation criteria according to the type: process, coherence, impact and feasibility; as well as the details of each of the corresponding indicators.
The coordinators from four countries had the opportunity to present the process, content and priority activities of their national strategies. The Mexican Association of Municipal Planning Institutes (AMIMP) was the first to present, in its debut as the country’s national coordinator, followed by the Argentine Network of Municipalities against Climate Change (RAMCC). The last two presentations were made by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – South America and by the National Union of Local Governments (UNGL).
