It is the largest global alliance of mayors and local leaders committed to climate action

The mayor Darci Lermen signed on February 26 the Letter of Commitment to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM). With the adhesion, the city of Parauapebas formalizes its intentions to promote the engagement of the municipal public management in actions of sustainable development and to confront climate change.

Mayor Lermen recognizes “that the commitment to the Global Covenant of Mayors requires efforts to implement policies and take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for the impacts of climate change, increase access to sustainable energy and monitor progress towards those goals”.

It will be up to the municipality of Parauapebas, within up to three years, to develop its own inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and conduct research on climate risks and vulnerabilities. The city will also set goals to reduce and limit gas emissions, develop a plan to address mitigation and adaptation to climate change, as well as access to sustainable energy, including provisions for regular reviews and reviews (annual and biennial). All shares must be sent to GCoM.

The environmental sanitation program

Darci Lermen reinforces that the municipality already develops actions of great social impact aimed at the well-being of local populations, as can be seen in the execution of the Environmental Sanitation Program, Macro drainage and Restoration of Igarapés and Banks of the Parauapebas River (Prosap), whose objective is to promote the socioeconomic and sustainable development of the intervention area, through the provision of environmental sanitation infrastructure, urban mobility, qualification of public spaces, resettlement and relocation of people from risk areas.

With the completion of all the interventions projected by Prosap, Parauapebas will have a coverage of more than 65% of sewage collection and treatment. Currently, the municipality collects 20% of sewage and treats only 8%. The goal is to improve the quality of life with the recovery and revitalization of the city’s important streams (Ilha do Coco, Guanabara, Chácara das Estrelas and Lajeado) and the withdrawal of 850 families from areas at risk. Prosap receives financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Clean city

Clean City is the result of Law 4,925 / 20, approved on December 20, 2020, which prohibits the practice of burning in Parauapebas. Recently, the municipal manager launched the Clean City Campaign so that the population can become aware of the need for zeal for the municipality. In case of non-compliance, administrative infraction and fines are foreseen. The municipality expects to reduce the occurrence rate by 60%.

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

In 2019, Mayor Darci Lermen also took on the Letter of Commitment of the SDG Strategy – Sustainable Development Goals, a coalition that brings together organizations representing civil society, the private sector, local governments and academia with the purpose of broadening and qualifying the debate at respect for the Sustainable Development Goals in Brazil and to mobilize, discuss and propose effective means of implementation for this agenda.

The SDGs contemplate 17 objectives and 169 goals to be achieved by 2030, involving different themes, such as eradicating poverty and hunger and promoting dignified life for all, fighting inequalities, protecting the human rights of the most excluded and vulnerable populations, promoting gender equality and empower women and children, build peaceful, just and inclusive societies and ensure lasting and resilient protection of the planet and its natural resources.
