VI National Assembly of Mayors of the Argentine Network of Municipalities Facing Climate Change (RAMCC)
April 13, 2024, Córdoba (Argentina) – The VI National Assembly of Mayors of the Argentine Network of Municipalities Facing Climate Change (RAMCC) took place on April 12 and 13, 2024, representing a fundamental space for meeting and exchange among leaders of local governments committed to combating climate change in Argentina. This annual event was essential for evaluating ongoing projects focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as defining future strategies in this area.
The opening session was attended by prominent personalities committed to climate action and energy. Amador Sánchez Rico, Ambassador of the European Union to Argentina, emphasized at the VI National Assembly of Mayors: ‘Climate change is real. The European Union is convinced that supranational support, like the Paris Agreement, needs to come down to the front line, the Municipalities. That’s where we must make a difference’.
Carolina Basualdo, Mayor of Despeñaderos and President of the Forum of Mayors and Representatives of Latin America on the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) Board, also shared her vision, saying: ‘This is something that we are passionate about, and each one of you needs to continue working in your community, with schools, institutions; achieve that change. Make each city resilient, sustainable, but also focus on the inclusion of people, women, families. Each of us is responsible, and I celebrate seeing all of Argentina gathered here’.
Additionally, the event featured the participation of Nicolás Cuesta, Mayor of San Justo, member of the GCoM Mayors Forum; and the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) represented by Ariadne Souza, GCoM Americas Technical Advisor, who moderated the roundtable ‘International Organizations and Cooperation’.
RAMCC plays a crucial role as the National Coordinator of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) in Argentina and as the implementer of the GCoM National Strategy in the country. In recent years, RAMCC has carried out various awareness-raising and technical training activities in Argentina, with the aim of strengthening the Local Climate Action Plans of municipalities and turning their ideas into concrete climate actions. The completion of the National Strategy represents an important milestone in our collaboration with RAMCC to advance the fight against climate change in Argentina.
