On March 24, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy begins the dialogue: Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy: betting on a green recovery agenda in Latin America. The virtual meeting will bring together mayors from Costa Rica, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina.
Latin American cities have been strongly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the difficult situation they face, they are the essential economic engines to drive the economic recovery of countries by doing so in a sustainable and inclusive way.
As we address the urgent need to revive those economies, we must keep in mind the increasingly urgent threat of climate change. “This reboot is an opportunity to consider the impacts of climate change on the environmental balance and promote a sustainable and inclusive economic recovery. It is our opportunity to rebuild in a cleaner, more sustainable and resilient way”, highlighted the coordinator of the Covenant for Latin America, Marja Edelman.
In June 2020, the Covenant, on behalf of the more than 10,000 cities that are part of the initiative called for a green and fair recovery. The mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz, representative of Latin America and the Caribbean on the Board, approached all the cities of the region to learn about their challenges for a green recovery and their experiences of success.
The event will provide an opportunity for cities to share their ecological recovery stories and best practices with other cities in the region. The themes of the meeting will bring experiences on solutions based on nature; sustainable mobility; energy transition; circular economy and waste management; air quality and public health; and food security.
Cities will also have the opportunity to learn about and get involved in the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The organization of the event has the support of the Government of Lima and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI). The dialogues will be mediated by the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Associations of Local Governments (FLACMA), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and Mercociudades.
