The 5th session of the Permanent Forum of National Coordinators of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Latin America and the Caribbean (GCoM LAC), which took place last September 24th, had the theme “Computer platforms and database management as support for mitigation studies in the face of climate change at the municipal level ”. The Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME) led the session and the debates through his representative, Cecilia Pozo.
Cecilia started the presentation by emphasizing the work developed in Ecuador with the creation, objectives and advances of the National Municipal Information System. “The association’s mission is to provide technical assistance and training to all municipalities. The tool has the objective of gathering Municipal Information generated during the exercise of municipal powers, for the elaboration of Territorial Planning and Development Plans”, she emphasized.
Reinforcing AME’s work, Cecilia spoke about the organization’s efforts in Ecuador and explained how the platform collects and publishes indicators for the treatment of solid and effluent waste, who uses this information and how it is used. Finally, they addressed the actions that AME wishes to implement in the near future and the importance of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) and other international agreements.
The WWF Ecuador project officer, Pedro Araujo, said that the platform could be implemented not only globally but also nationally and stressed the importance of the Forum space. “I believe that this space for sharing what we have in different countries is very good because we see the experiences and we can also ask for support in order to qualify ourselves and to know how we are doing,” he said.
The 6th session of the Forum will have the theme “Municipal Energy Transition: Local Strategies before the Climate Change” and should take place on October 29th. The session will be presented by the national Pact Coordinators in Chile: Adapt-Chile and the Asociación Chilena de Municipalidades (AChM)
