Opening Session: Unlocking Local Climate Action in the Caribbean and Latin America. The Way Forward

The opening session will bring together representatives from local and national governments, city networks, development financial institutions, and the private sector to discuss opportunities for unlocking local climate action in the region. In this session, GCoM aims to address the challenges faced by cities in the region in financing their low-carbon, climate-resilient, and equitable development. The main theme relates to accessing international climate finance and development investments.
The event will feature the participation of the European Union Ambassador to Panama, Izabela Matusz, and other partners, including representatives from the Ministry of Environment of Panama, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, the Climate Investment Fund (Gap Fund), CAF – Development Bank of Latin America, and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
Event Format
The event format will include a roundtable followed by group discussions to encourage active participation and knowledge exchange. Participants will represent local governments from Latin America and the Caribbean, both signatories and non-signatories of the Covenant of Mayors.
This session is a crucial part of the Covenant’s efforts to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange among cities in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, ensuring they can access the necessary resources to address climate change at the local level.
