Global Covenant of Mayors Recognizes 16 Brazilian Cities for Climate Advances
Brasília, November 8, 2023 – At the IV National Meeting of Municipalities, organized by the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM) in Brasília on November 7, the recognition ceremony for 16 Brazilian cities by the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy took place. The cities of Abaetetuba (PA), Barcarena (PA), Belém (PA), Brasiléia (AC), Cáceres (MT), Canoas (RS), Carinhanha (BA), Cordeirópolis (SP), Francisco Morato (SP), Jandaíra (RN), Quissamã (RJ), São Cristovão (SE), São Leopoldo (RS), Sirinhaém (PE), Sobral (CE), and Xapuri (AC) were awarded medals in recognition of their exceptional progress in the fight against climate change and the promotion of access to sustainable energy.
These medals were awarded in three distinct categories: greenhouse gas mitigation, adaptation to climate change, and compliance with all Covenant goals. The awarded cities demonstrated an unwavering commitment to building a more sustainable future alongside the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy with the support of the European Union.
The event took place during the panel “Towards a Sustainable Brazil for COP 30,” promoted by the National Coordinators of the Global Covenant of Mayors in Brazil and was attended by federal government authorities, Brazilian mayors, and institutions associated with the Global Covenant of Mayors. This recognition is a testament to the hard and dedicated work in the pursuit of effective climate solutions for Latin American municipalities.
According to Stephanie Horel, Director of the Americas Program at the Delegation of the European Union in Brazil and one of the authorities presenting the awards to the cities, “The commitment and efforts of Brazilian municipalities are an inspiring example of how cities can lead the way in the fight against climate change. We are proud to support their initiatives and celebrate their significant advances.”
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Brazil is committed to supporting and celebrating cities advancing in their climate actions, aiming for a more sustainable future, with the support of the European Union and the collaboration of the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM), Instituto Alziras, Frente Nacional de Prefeitos (FNP), and ICLEI South America.
