Success in Peru with the Specialization Course in the Development of Local Climate Action Plans.
Lima (Peru), December 11, 2023 – The successful conclusion of the 2nd Specialization Course in the Development of Local Climate Action Plans (PLAC) in Peru is celebrated with great success. This initiative, which took place on December 1st in Lima, marked a significant milestone by allowing numerous Peruvian municipalities to strengthen their commitment to the Global Covenant of Mayors, proudly presenting their Local Climate Action Plans.
The event, supported by the Forum of Cities for Life and the Association of Municipalities of Peru, featured the notable participation of Víctor Velarde, Cooperation Project Officer of the European Union Delegation in Peru, and Ariadne Souza, Technical Advisor of GIZ. Among the course’s notable achievements is the reinforcement of local capacities to develop and implement approved PLACs, the reactivation and support of the National Coordination (Forum-AMPE) and the National Advisory Council, as well as the increased influence, visibility, and knowledge of the Covenant in the country.

About the Specialization Course in the Development of Local Climate Action Plans in Peru
As part of the 2022-2023 Strategy of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Peru, the Forum Cities for Life and AMPE joined forces to offer the Specialization Course in the Development of Local Climate Action Plans (PLAC). Certified by the National University of Engineering, this course concluded today with great success, strengthening the capacities of authorities and municipal officials to develop and implement Local Climate Action Plans.

Subscribing municipalities to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Peru are committed to developing and implementing Local Climate Action Plans to promote sustainability and resilience to climate change in the country’s cities. The course’s strategy contributed to the implementation of priority areas of the Global Covenant of Mayors, strengthening local capacities, and promoting the adherence of new municipalities.
Methodology
The course was conducted virtually, combining theoretical classes with practical workshops. Fundamental concepts were addressed, from greenhouse gas inventories to the importance of having a Local Climate Action Plan. Practical sessions involved working with specific information from each municipality to generate greenhouse gas inventories, as well as adaptation and mitigation measures.
