Amazonian Cities Forum at COP28 in Dubai
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is pleased to invite the global community to actively participate in the session of the Amazonian Cities Forum during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai. This crucial event will take place on December 2, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (GMT+4), at the IDB Group Pavilion, in the Blue Zone Pavilion, Opportunities District (OA04G2).
The session of the Amazonian Cities Forum, supported by the Global Covenant of Mayors, will bring together leaders committed to addressing the challenges of urbanization in the Amazon region. With over 70% of the population in the Amazon residing in urban areas, these cities face critical issues such as limited access to essential services, insufficient infrastructure, and precarious living conditions.
Unplanned and unsustainable urbanization poses significant threats to ecosystems and biodiversity, increasing the vulnerability of Amazonian cities to the impacts of climate change. Despite these challenges, these cities play a crucial role in sustainable development, offering opportunities to transition to alternative models based on bioeconomics.
The event will feature prominent participation from local leaders, including Edmilson Rodrigues, Mayor of Belém, Brazil; Ana Lucia Reis, Mayor of Cobija, Bolivia; Vladimir Chong, Mayor of the Province of Maynas, Peru; Jader Barbalho Filho, Minister of Cities, Brazil; Carlos da Fonseca, Special Advisor for International Affairs to the Minister of Institutional Relations, Brazil; and Verónica Gálmez, Deputy Director, Mitigation and Adaptation Division, GCF. The session will be moderated by Tatiana Schor, Head of the Amazon Region Unit of the Global Covenant of Mayors.
Cities participating in this Amazonian Cities Forum are active members of the Global Covenant of Mayors, supported by the European Union in Latin America. Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize that the European Union, through the Global Covenant of Mayors in Latin America, demonstrates a firm commitment to climate action in the Amazon and supports initiatives that promote sustainable development in the region.
