During the two study visits, both cities had the opportunity to identify common areas of interest for the action plan. In the first mission to Belo Horizonte, in which four representatives of the city of Almada participated, the agenda included visits to Smart City Development projects, such as the Belo Horizonte Integrated Operations Center and a Public-Private Partnership working for the modernization of public lighting in the city. In the environmental area, the group visited a Consortium created for the recovery of the Pampulha Lagoon; urban parks; an urban agriculture project; a space for the creation of ladybugs for pest control in urban farms; and the renovation of the Mineirão Soccer Stadium including efficient and sustainable technologies. They also visited the “Vila Viva” social housing project, where they were able to learn more about how they integrate social, urban and legal aspects into a large project to provide adequate housing for low-income communities. In the second mission to Almada, a delegation of 5 representatives from Belo Horizonte visited the city in order to learn in situ about the climate change and sustainable transport policies and experiences implemented by the Portuguese municipality. The Brazilian team had a series of meetings on different policies and initiatives implemented by Almada on the issue of climate change, which has been a pillar of municipal policy for years. Other types of projects being implemented were also visited, and the team was able to learn about activities organized for school children on zero plastic; projects implemented in a vulnerable community; different means of transportation; a park built in the city center; as well as a wastewater treatment plant.
