Ecuador takes a step further in the region to embrace the governance of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Latin America. The National Advisory Committee (CCN) was formed and held its inaugural meeting last Thursday (03). Representatives from the Delegation of the European Union in Ecuador, the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME), WWF Ecuador, the Ministry of the Environment, the Metropolitan District of Quito, ICLEI South America, and the Secretariat of the Covenant in Latin America were present.

During the meeting, the importance of joining forces in the climate fight was discussed, along with strategies and priorities of the Covenant in Ecuador. The aim is to involve municipalities in the country more quickly and with a strong commitment.
On Friday (04), at the event organized by Quito titled “Dialogues for Climate: towards a vertical integration of local and national climate actions,” the Covenant was officially launched in the country, with an invitation for municipalities to sign the commitment. During the event, Mauricio Rodas (Mayor of Quito), Tarcisio Granizo (Minister of the Environment), Alejandro Álvarez (Director of AME), and Hugo Arnal (Director of WWF Ecuador) signed the commitment on behalf of their institutions as members of the Advisory Committee in the country.

Now, cities in Ecuador have a greater opportunity to collaborate with international stakeholders in the fight against climate change. Learn more about how to join your city to the Covenant aquí.
