The city
The city of Rio de Janeiro has been committed to the GCoM since 2015 and has already earned adaptation and mitigation medals, being in full compliance with the initiative.
Since joining in 2015, the city has stood out for its climate measures. By 2030, Rio will build nature-based solutions for urban space challenges. The goal of revitalizing 300 km of roads and public spaces, with sustainable urban drainage and extensive afforestation, integrates mobility with the need for infrastructure resilient to climate change.
Recently, the city has invested in the agenda to combat plastic pollution, and as an example, the Circular Beach Project stands out, funded by the European Union. In operation at Copacabana beach, between Posts 3 and 4, the project aims to test and validate new business models focused on reducing plastic consumption, in addition to the elimination and replacement of these items, including best practices in waste management.
