The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy took another step forward with the official launch of the initiative in Mexico. During the Smart City Expo LatAm 2018 Congress, during September 11 and 13 in the city of Puebla, the aforementioned launching took place.
During this event, 6 Mexican cities adhered to the Pact and thus demonstrated their commitment to the fight against climate change. In addition, the cities of Corrientes in Argentina and Santa Anita in Peru also joined this global initiative.

Presentations were made by representatives of the newly adhered cities to the Pact, in which each of them presented their actions for the fight against climate change.
Manuel Fuentes, head of the International Urban Cooperation Program for Latin America (IUC-LAC), presented the progress of the Pact in Latin America. He also participated in the Panel on Sustainable Economic Development, organized by GIZ in Mexico. “The most important part of the meeting in Mexico was the integration between the Pact of South America and the Pact of Mexico and also an integration between the Mayors of South America and Mexico, with a great exchange of ideas, synergies were created between groups of mayors,” said Manuel Fuentes.
The event brought together the main representatives of the participating cities, institutions, civil society organizations and companies that wish to identify common challenges and thus collaborate by sharing and discussing solutions to improve urban planning on issues of mitigation, adaptation to climate change and access to energy.

The main organizations involved with the initiative were present, such as the delegation of the European Union in Mexico, represented by Ms. Imma Roca i Cortes, Large Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Capacity Development Plan (CDP), Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC), Directorate General for Energy (DG Energy), Directorate General for Climate (DG Climate) and others.
This event will play an important role in disseminating and promoting the Covenant, so that more cities become aware of the Covenant’s activities and become interested in joining it, thus strengthening cooperation between cities in tackling Climate Change.
