- The project will last 15 months and will be divided into 8 phases.
The training will help cities to build their capacity in the fight against climate change and to promote a more sustainable development of their cities in order to comply with the Covenant’s commitments.
In its efforts to make cities more developed and sustainable, two years ago the European Union launched the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) program, an initiative that works directly with city authorities and municipalities around the world to support them in the process.
Since then and until today, more than 75 cities in Mexico have joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), a component of the IUC program, where cities receive technical assistance to modernize and connect their territories, as well as to combat climate change.
The call for applications for the Global Covenant of Mayors with technical assistance was open from March 6 to March 30. During the process, the aim was to find cities to provide technical assistance, through a team of experts, that would enable them to improve their capacities in order to respond to GCoM reporting requirements and demonstrate leadership and innovation in the context of GCoM in Mexico.
Among all 30 municipalities that participated in the selection process, the cities with the highest scores in each of the selection criteria were:
- Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit
- Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua
- Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas
- Culiacán, Sinaloa
- Zapopan, Jalisco

The five selected cities will enjoy over the next 15 months, divided into 8 phases, training courses, technical workshops tailored to their cities and ongoing technical assistance from experts who, among other tasks, will work with local staff to identify key data to be collected, take the activity data provided and compile it into a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory that will be used for climate risk assessment.
With this initiative, the European Union and Mexico are strengthening ties in the struggle to lead the global fight for sustainable urban development in cities and respect for the environment.
