The city
The city of Peñalolén has been committed to the Global Covenant of Mayors since 2018 and has environmental and climate management milestones, laying the foundations for management based on addressing the climate crisis as a development issue. The city is also part of the Chilean Network of Municipalities for Climate Change. The municipality developed its first climate change plan in a participatory manner.
The municipality created the Inclusive Recycling Program with the participation of over 80 grassroots recyclers, 103 recycling routes, a network of green points, and over 15,000 people participating. The project is a waste collection and recovery system carried out by grassroots recyclers in coordination with the municipality. It is a program that integrates social and environmental variables. On the one hand, it serves as an agent of social mobilization, allowing many families to have decent work outside of clandestinity, and on the other hand, it helps reduce community waste.
