At the 84th General Meeting of the National Front of Mayors (FNP), held on March 12 and 13 in Brasília, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) demonstrated that concrete and measurable actions to tackle climate change are within our reach. Hélinah Cardoso, coordinator of the GCoM Americas, emphasized the importance of the climate agenda and the role of local governments in overcoming the climate challenges that the country currently faces.
In a significant step towards sustainability, six local governments made a fundamental commitment to combat climate change by joining the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Petrópolis/RJ, Pelotas/RS, Paragominas/PA, Igarassu/PE, Apucarana/PR, and Jaguariúna/SP are the six new cities that have joined this initiative, which aims to address environmental challenges and facilitate access to sustainable energy for all.
This is a clear sign that local governments are committed to seeking sustainable solutions to ensure a better future for their inhabitants. The mayors of the cities that joined the GCoM emphasized the importance of municipal engagement in promoting concrete environmental actions.
The mayor of Petrópolis, Rubens Bomtempo, highlighted the need to unite efforts for sustainability and to face environmental challenges. The mayor of Apucarana, Sebastião Ferreira Martins Júnior, stated that the GCoM is essential for cities to work together with others towards a more sustainable future. The mayor of Pelotas, Paula Mascarenhas, declared that joining the alliance reinforces the municipality’s commitment to facing climate challenges and seeking sustainable solutions.
The mayor of Igarassu, Elcione Ramos, emphasized the project’s relevance as a global alliance and celebrated the integration into the network, highlighting that the municipality will intensify its actions for sustainability and quality of life for its citizens. “This initiative is a big step towards a more sustainable and renewable future, where all cities can be greener and cleaner,” said the mayor.
For the mayor of Jaguariúna, Gustavo Reis, being part of the GCoM means committing to public policies aimed at climate and energy defense. “We will work to improve the quality of life and curb global warming in our planet and our city,” he highlighted.
The National Front of Mayors is one of the coordinating institutions of the Global Covenant of Mayors in Brazil and has been supporting the implementation of the National Strategy of the alliance for the country.
