The GCoM Americas at COP27

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) Americas actively participates in the 27th UN Conference on Climate Change. COP 27 will occur between the 6th and 18th of November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt).

On Monday (14), the GCoM participated in the session “Sheltering and empowering informal communities: a conversation among leaders in local government, informal settlements, and shelter solution providers”. In the face of growing climate risks and dangers, the debate aims to include informal settlements and their residents in urban governance and planning and identify and implement solutions to provide shelter and infrastructure for informal settlements.

To discuss the implementation and monitoring of clean energy systems as part of the climate action plans of local governments, the roundtable “Fair Energy Transition in Latin America: Ensuring Energy Security and Equity for the Territory” will be held on Tuesday. On the 15th and will be attended by the mayor of Peñalolén (Chile), Carolina Leitao.

Also, on Tuesday (15), a set of indicators, guidelines and timelines will be released to help the more than twelve thousand GCoM signatories take measures for a just energy transition. The panel discussion “Cities stepping up to the energy crisis: launching the Energy Access and Poverty Pillar of the GCoM Common Reporting Framework” will have the participation of the mayor of Cáceres (Brazil), Eliene Liberato.

The panel discussion “Accelerating urban climate innovation in 2023: the Innovate4Cities Conference and 1st Annual Innovation Summit” takes place on Wednesday (16). The mayor of Palmas (Brazil), Cinthia Ribeiro, participates in the debate aimed at accelerating global urban research and innovation for cities’ climate action through knowledge sharing and cross-sector partnerships, as well as driving wider involvement of various sectors in climate action.

Finally, on Thursday (17), the GCoM Americas will participate in the session “Nature-based solutions and circular development strategies to address the climate emergency in Latin America”. The event, organized by ICLEI, will address topics such as the impacts of natural disasters and pandemics on cities, in addition to the consequences of climate change. Possibilities will be presented to avoid the intensive use of resources, prioritizing solutions based on nature.

17/11 – 16:00: Nature-based solutions and circular development strategies to address the climate emergency in Latin America.
