\u00abThe implementation of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in Chilean municipalities continues to progress through the National Strategy specifically developed for the country and supported by the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) Program of the European Union.<\/p>\n

Currently, 8 Chilean cities are already committed to developing climate action plans (SECAPs) under the Covenant, with 6 of them considered flagship cities, meaning cities at the forefront of the issue in the country: Independencia, Santiago, Providencia, Pe\u00f1alolen, Vitacura, and Temuco.<\/p>\n

Support for these municipalities is provided under the National Strategy for the country defined by the National Advisory Committee (CCN) of the Covenant in Chile and approved by the Regional Steering Committee of the Covenant for Latin America and the Caribbean. The CCN is a working group with key actors for the advancement of the theme and seeks to ensure consideration of the national reality to implement the Covenant at the local level. It includes the participation of the National Coordinators of the Covenant for the country, which are Adapt Chile and the Chilean Association of Municipalities (AChM). P\u00eda Hevia, Subdirector of Adapt Chile, emphasized that the flagship municipalities \u00abwere pioneers in the development of their Local Climate Action Plans\u00bb and are in an advanced phase of the process, regularly meeting with Adapt Chile to work on adaptation components, finalizing risk and vulnerability reports for municipalities, and mitigation.<\/p>\n

\u00abWe hope that next year, municipalities can move on to the implementation phase of SECAPs. We believe that the work being done will serve as an incentive for more municipalities in the country to join this important global initiative,\u00bb said Hevia.<\/p>\n

Hevia also explained that there are other municipalities in an earlier phase of the process for developing climate action plans but are also doing interesting work, such as San Pedro de la Paz, Concepci\u00f3n, or Torres del Payne.<\/p>\n

The Covenant in Chile<\/p>\n

Since its launch in Chile, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy has been carrying out activities in the country to support cities, not only by providing tools and resources to help them implement emission reduction and climate change prevention plans but also by creating collaboration spaces that allow teams to create synergies and share best practices.<\/p>\n

For P\u00eda Hevia, being allies of the Covenant of Mayors \u00abis very important, as the Covenant acts as an umbrella that allows things to be strengthened, while municipalities collectively learn to plan and manage increasingly frequent events, such as tidal waves, landslides, or fires, which strongly impact the territory.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Regarding the contribution of the Covenant and Adapt Chile, Pia stated, \u00abOur experience has shown us that one of the first things municipalities value is facing the work with an integrative vision. Local governments are doing many things related to climate change, so they demand a perspective that helps them see and organize everything while promoting dialogue and cooperation among the various departments of the administrations.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Thus, after various activities developed in the country, such as meetings of the National Advisory Committee for the country, participation of cities and National Coordinators in training and follow-up workshops with flagship cities, the initiative strengthens more and more, providing support to Chilean municipalities in their journey against climate change.\u00bb<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
