The city
The city of Belo Horizonte has been committed to the Global Covenant of Mayors since 2015 and has already earned medals for adaptation and mitigation, being in full compliance with the initiative. Since joining in 2015, the city has stood out for its climate measures. In 2020, the Belo Horizonte City Hall delivered the 4th Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory.
From 2014 to 2019, according to the GHG Inventory document, there was a 22% reduction in emissions. In the same year, the municipality also published the revision of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan (PREGEE), with ambitious reduction targets of 37% by 2030 and 41% by 2040.
Belo Horizonte is part of the Urban LEDS project, which assists participating cities in developing comprehensive low-emission urban development strategies (Low Emissions Development Strategies – LEDS) and working together to implement plans and pilot projects, as well as financing models for the implementation of these strategies. In its second phase, the focus is on collaborative work with participating cities for the development of pilot projects and financing models for the implementation of low-carbon urban strategies (LEDS).
