The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) in the Americas actively participates in the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference. COP 27 will take place from November 6 to 18, 2022, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
On Monday (14), the Covenant participated in the session ‘Shelter and Empowerment of Informal Communities: A Conversation Among Leaders of Local Governments, Informal Settlements, and Housing Solution Providers.’ In the face of growing climate risks and hazards, the debate aims to include informal settlements and their residents in governance and urban planning, as well as identify and implement solutions to provide housing and infrastructure for informal settlements.
With the goal of discussing the implementation and monitoring of clean energy systems as part of local government climate action plans, on Tuesday, the roundtable ‘A Just Energy Transition in Latin America: Ensuring Energy Security and Equity for the Territory’ will take place and will feature the participation of the Mayor of Peñalolén (Chile) and member of the GCoM Mayor’s Forum, Carolina Leitao.
Also on Tuesday (15), a set of indicators, guidelines, and timelines will be launched to assist the over twelve thousand Covenant signatories in taking action for a just energy transition. The roundtable ‘Cities Getting Ready for the Energy Crisis: Launching the Energy Access and Poverty Pillar of the GCoM Common Reporting Framework’ will feature the participation of the Mayor of Cáceres (Brazil), Eliene Liberato.
The panel discussion ‘Acceleration of Urban Climate Innovation in 2023: Innovate4Cities Conference and 1st Annual Innovation Summit’ takes place on Wednesday (16). The Mayor of Palmas (Brazil), Cinthia Ribeiro, participates in the discussion, which aims to accelerate global urban research and innovation for climate action in cities through knowledge exchange and cross-sectoral partnerships, as well as drive broader participation from various sectors in climate action.
Finally, on Thursday (17), GCoM Americas participates in the session ‘Nature-Based Solutions and Circular Development Strategies to Address the Climate Emergency in Latin America.’ The event, organized by ICLEI, will address topics such as the impacts of natural disasters and pandemics on cities, in addition to the consequences of climate change. Possibilities to avoid resource-intensive use will be presented, prioritizing nature-based solutions.
